Medical Lab Product Design – a printer that can rapidly, accurately and consistently print patients’ details onto glass slides
How we designed a next-generation smart slide and cassette glass printers for the lab

summary

A fully working, engineered design for Pyramid Innovations.

Very high precision mechanical design using electronics, sensors, motors, PCBs, belts and pulleys.

Took concept designs through to production-ready design.

Supply chain and procurement support.

the brief

Pyramid Innovations came to us for support in bringing to market a printer that can rapidly, accurately and consistently print patients’ details onto glass slides prior to blood samples being placed next to these.

They wanted us to present concepts and go on to create functional prototypes until the design was approved and production ready.

solution

The challenge here was the level of precision design involved with this medical lab product design. We handled all mechanical design, 3D modelling and created detailed engineering drawings.

The printer itself used sensors, motors, PCBs, belts and pulleys and its mechanics and electronics were encased in injection moulded plastic.

the result

Designed to reduce slide handling (and the increased risk of contamination from this) the printer fits perfectly into the pathology labs workflow.
Pyramid Innovations’ next generation histology / pathology smart slide and cassette printers are designed to increase laboratory automation and fit into your workflow. Their small size, speed (3 to 6 seconds) and low noise level make them ideal for printing slides and cassettes as you need them at the grossing and sectioning workstation. Their on-demand printing capability enables slides and cassettes to be printed as required rather than the inherent risk of batch printing.
